Victims of Merapi Build Shelter Own

YOGYAKARTA-house temporary or shelter victims of the eruption of Mount Merapi in Sleman will be built by the community itself. They will be given the capital to build Rp. 6.5 million and construction will be supervised by the National Disaster Management Agency.

This was conveyed by Head of National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) Syamsul Maarif, in Yogyakarta, on Saturday (11/20/2010). Temporary shelters, according to the plan, to be built in several locations within 7-13 km from the peak of Merapi. Development wait for the end of the emergency response.

For now, the location of shelter will be built into a radius of alert, ie 10-15 km from the summit of Merapi, for example Glagaharjo, Argomulyo, Kepuharjo, Wukirsari, Umbulharjo, and Sindumartani. “Still not safe. Shelter is expected to be completed within a week. People will be given the capital to build their own. The house is expected to last for one year strong,” said Syamsul.

“While in Yogyakarta, a shelter home for single heads of households and their locations scattered, shelter in the disaster area Merapi, Central Java, will be as a barracks. People will stay in shelter until we enter the rehabilitation and reconstruction phase,” he added.

Also described, in addition to the house, BNPB also will manage the construction and infrastructure improvements, such as clean water, electricity, and access roads.

Here are the estimated number of family heads in Sleman, Yogyakarta, which will be given shelter development assistance, based on survey data of land preparation shelter BNPB:

  1. 833 families at Glagaharjo, will be built shelter in an area of 8 hectares in Banjarsari.
  2. Argomulyo 129 families, will be built shelter in an area of 8 hectares in Kuwang.
  3. 830  families at Kepuharjo, will be built shelter on 10 hectares of land in Pagerjurang.
  4. 338 families at Wukirsari, will be made shelter in the land of 3 hectares in the jiggle.
  5. 282 families at Umbulharjo, will be made shelter in the land of 3 hectares in Plosokerep.
  6. Sindumartani 15 households, will be made shelter in the land area of 3.5 hectares in Plumbon.
